Alex and I don’t spend much money on pampering at spas. Instead, we’ve chosen to slowly accumulate an incredible collection of botanical ingredients. We custom make our own beauty products and personalized spa treatments.  We can whip up some pretty lux spa nights with what we have on hand! Here is our at home spa nirvana facial steam!

We love to start our evening of pampering with a facial routine.

These are the steps we like to incorporate:

  • Cleanse
  • Scrub
  • Steam
  • Mask
  • Toner
  • Moisturize

This post is going to focus on step #3, the indulgent botanical face steam we have created. (We have lots of other ideas for customized beauty products. Check Here for a beautiful face serum.)

Our recipe is a general guideline, it’s not necessary to have all the ingredients listed here in order to have a lovely facial steam.

Here’s a bit of general information about why we include each of these ingredients.

Calendula – this gentle herb is thought to have antibacterial properties and may help improve skin’s appearance

Chamomile – this beautiful flower is purported to have calming and soothing properties

Lavender – this fragrant flower is felt to have antimicrobial properties that may help reduce the bacteria that causes blemishes. As well, it’s a calming, soothing scent to inhale while you’re steaming!

Rose – is said to calm the skin and is found to have antioxidants beneficial for the skin

Rosemary – is believed to have natural antiseptic properties

Steaming with these herbs may not impart as much of the benefits as when directly applied on the skin, but honestly, even if there were no benefits I’d do it just for the incredible scent!

Holding your head over a warm, steamy bowl of floral scented water is just bliss.

Nirvana Facial Steam

Add one tablespoon of each of the following:

  • Dried Calendula
  • Dried Lavender
  • Dried Chamomile
  • Dried Rose Petals
  • Dried Rosemary

Optional to add calendula, helichrysum, chamomile, lavender, and rose essential oils

Directions:

Assemble dried herbs and flowers in a large wide mouth bowl. Add a few drops of any essential oils you’ve chosen. Have a large towel close at hand. Boil a kettle of water and pour over your assembled bowl. Caution: let the initial steam cool slightly before you begin as it can get very hot. Find a comfy spot and set a timer for 5 minutes.  Place your head over the bowl and a towel over your head. Trap the steam in and close your eyes. Inhale that wonderful scent.

We also use this recipe as a tub steam. Simply add these ingredients to a steamy tub of water, light a candle and relax. Pro tip: we picked up a fish tank net to scoop the petals out of the water when we are done so they don’t build up and plug the drain!
