There’s a few good reasons to kick the take out coffee habit. They may include looking to save that extra money, eliminating some of those exorbitant calories or reducing environmental impact. Whatever the reason, the decision to stop buying take out coffee is much easier to stand by if you have at home coffee nirvana.
Speaking for ourselves, we love a strong and flavorful cup of coffee to start our day. After switching to at home brew, we found the results watery and lacking flavor. Over the years we tried different options. We tried the typical coffee maker, sucked in by the idea of programming our machine to have a steaming cup waiting for us as we awakened in the predawn hours. Then we tried the pod style brewer thinking we could enjoy all the tasty varieties that mimicked coffee house flavors.
Eventually, we created this: Ideal Nirvana Morning Coffee Ritual!
Step 1. The Beans
We buy espresso whole bean coffee. Here’s the key. We don’t make espresso with it. We just make regular coffee with the dark, strong, rich beans! No more watery, tasteless coffee for these girls!
Step 2. The Grind
We grind our beans fresh each morning using a coffee grinder like this one. Two heaping tablespoons of beans go in the grinder for each cup of coffee we want to brew. The finer you grind the beans the more bitter the taste. We generally do a couple of quick pulses on the espresso setting to create a coarse grind.
Step 3. The Press
We use the kettle to boil water and then pour over the beans which we’ve added to this french press. Alex researched a good long while to find this particular model. Christy likes it because it’s not glass. We went through a few glass ones before cutting our losses and moving to a 100% stainless steel model (read Christy is not the most graceful girl). We also like it because french presses are typically small, yielding a single small cup of coffee. This will not do in our house. This model yields 2 large, satisfying cups. HERE is the model we use from Amazon
Step 4. The Ritual
This step is critical. Alex and I both make a point of relaxing and enjoying our cup of coffee in a favorite mug before embarking on the craziness that is life. This is where the ritual part comes in. Sit down and savor it. It can be on the deck in the morning in the summer or curled up by the gas fireplace in the winter. Just give yourself the gift of a few quiet moments to begin your day.
Step 5. The Mug
If you are one of those people that needs a coffee to go, pick up one really good quality travel mug that keeps your coffee hot. If you have a hot, tasty cup of coffee when heading out to run your errands, you won’t be tempted to stop and ‘treat yourself’. This model is Nirvana girl approved. Here’s another handy link.
