For those of you who follow our blog, you already know that part of my fitness routine is weightlifting. Another part of that routine is consuming the inevitable post workout protein shake to help fuel my muscle growth. I’ve said it before but it bears repeating. It gets stale drinking protein shakes for breakfast most days. Especially in this house where we are self proclaimed foodies and love to cook! I have had to get creative with my smoothie flavors so that when I come home from the gym I can actually look forward to breakfast. I have developed some really great variations and this Raspberry Lemon Protein Smoothie is the highlight of my breakfast week!
The Berries
I love the combination of raspberry with lemon, but this would also be tasty with blueberries, blackberries or even strawberries. I keep my freezer stocked with frozen organic fruit from Costco. That way I can swap between flavors. For more inspiration, check out my Mango Lassi Protein Shake recipe.
The Lemon
I use lemon curd in my recipe. It does have sugar in it, so this smoothie is a treat in my rotation and not an everyday indulgence. It gives the shake a tart but sweet flavor.
The Milk
For the shake base, my go to is unsweetened organic almond milk. But you could substitute regular, oat, or soy milk and it would still be great.
The Protein Powder
Before we get to the recipe, let me just quickly touch on protein powder. I’m not an expert, nor a nutrionist so always do your own research to find a product that’s right for you. I have been using Leanfit Naturals for years. I like that it is sweetened with stevia and Alex appreciates that it’s gluten free. I also like that it’s all non-GMO ingredients. It packs alot of protein in one scoop, coming in at 25g of protein. Also important to me is that I can get it in a large container at Costco so I’m not always running out of protein powder!
